WhatsApp automation pricing in 2026: plan the workflow and the running cost.
WhatsApp bills per message, service replies are free only for the first 1,000 a month since October 2026, and Indian accounts have a rupee deadline. What that means for the way you automate.

For many businesses in India, the UAE and beyond, WhatsApp is where customers actually reply. That makes it the natural home for enquiry handling, booking confirmations, reminders and follow-ups. It also means the way Meta charges for the WhatsApp Business Platform shapes which automations are worth building.
Updated 20 October 2026: from 1 October 2026 Meta charges for service messages beyond 1,000 a month per number, charges for utility replies inside the service window again, and raised marketing rates in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. India's marketing rate last changed on 1 January 2026. The sections below reflect this.
How billing works now
Since 1 July 2025, Meta bills per delivered template message instead of per 24-hour conversation. Templates fall into three categories, marketing, utility and authentication, and the rate depends on the category, your volume tier and the country code of the person receiving it.
- Service messages are no longer entirely free. Since 1 October 2026, each business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages a month (ordinary text, images and replies while a customer service window is open), and Meta charges per message after that.
- Utility templates sent in reply inside an open customer service window were free from July 2025, but Meta has charged for them again since 1 October 2026.
- Marketing templates are always charged.
- When someone messages you from a Click to WhatsApp ad or a Facebook Page button on mobile, a free entry point window opens and messages, including templates, are free for 72 hours.
- Meta only changes prices on the first day of a quarter, with at least a month's notice.
For Indian businesses: eligible accounts must move to INR billing by 31 December 2026. Meta says accounts that have not migrated will stop delivering messages from 1 January 2027. Check this with your provider now rather than in the last week of December.
Design the conversation around the window
The cheapest message is a reply the customer invited. So the best automations start from something the customer does: an enquiry, a click on an ad, a question about an order. Once that window is open, a well-built flow can answer questions, qualify the lead, collect details and confirm a booking without paying for each step.

- Answer first, sell second. A fast, useful reply inside the window does more than a marketing template sent later.
- Classify templates honestly. A booking confirmation is utility; a discount is marketing. Meta decides the category, and a mismatch changes the cost.
- Use Click to WhatsApp ads where they fit, because the free entry point window gives you room for a real conversation. We plan these as part of paid ads on Meta and Google.
- Hand over to a person at the right moment, with the conversation so far attached, so nobody has to ask the customer to repeat themselves.
What a sensible setup looks like
Most small and mid-sized businesses do not need a heavy platform. The WhatsApp Cloud API, a workflow tool such as n8n or Make, and a simple source of truth like a Google Sheet or a CRM cover a lot: new enquiries logged automatically, a reply within seconds, reminders the day before an appointment, and a weekly summary for the owner. Add logging and an alert when a workflow fails, and the team can trust it.

Before building, write down the three or four conversations that happen most often, how many of each you see in a month, and which ones need a person. That one page usually tells you what to automate first, and roughly what it will cost to run. If the replies need judgement rather than rules, that is where AI and automation comes in.
